Creative writing courses are a "waste of time", according to the novelist — and creative writing teacher — Hanif Kureishi, who says that "a lot of my students just can't tell a story". Kureishi, whose debut novel The Buddha of Suburbia won the Whitbread first novel prize, was speaking at the Independent Bath Literature festival on Sunday. He was made a professor at Kingston University last autumn, when he said it was " truly an exciting time to be a part of the creative writing department", but on Sunday Kureishi told the Bath audience that, when it came to his students, "it's probably They can write sentences but they don't know how to make a story go from there all the way through to the end without people dying of boredom in between.
It's a difficult thing to do and it's a great skill to have. Can you teach that? I don't think you can," said Kureishi, according to the Independentwhich sponsors the festival. They worry about the writing and the prose and you think: 'Fuck the prose, no one's going to read your book for the writing, all they want to do is find out what happens in the story next. And after about five years they really realise something about writing.
It's a very slow thing. People go on writing courses for a weekend and you think, 'A weekend? He wouldn't, Kureishi said, according to the Independent, pay money to take an MA in creative writing himself.
I wouldn't do it like that. That would be madness. I would find one teacher who I thought would be really good for me," he told his audience. With a vast range of creative writing courses on offer in the UK - including from the Guardian - Kureishi is not the only author to feel the same way. Novelist and former creative writing teacher Lucy Ellmann, while disagreeing with Kureishi that style is unimportant, nevertheless described creative writing as "the biggest con-job in academia", and pointed to the poet August Kleinzahler's comment in the Guardian that "It's terrible to lie to young people.
And that's what it's about. It doesn't even provide a safe haven for writers, as Hanif made clear, because most universities go out of their way to ruin writers with admin, overwork, and other nonsense.Courseworks barnard college application fee

If you want to write, said Ellmann, "what you should really be doing is reading as much good literature as you can get your hands on, for years and years, rather than wasting half your university life writing stuff you're not ready to write".
And once you've done that, "what you need and deserve is individual help, as Hanif says," she said. And I can't stand it when authors announce they have a degree in creative writing.
So what? They're a dime a dozen. She told the Guardian: "My job is not to teach my MA students to write; my job is to explode language in their faces.

Why don't you write him up? Everybody'd be interested in him. That'd be a wonderful setting for a story! Anyone who has ever claimed to be a novelist will recognise this exchange. What other grown-up gets told how to do their job so often as a writer? Or rather, what is it about writing that makes other people think they know how to do it?
Commentators have expressed surprise at how hard working and conscientious he was as a studio employee, as though something other than hard work and conscientiousness had produced Tender is the Night and The Great Gatsby. But no amount of toil could disguise the fact that Fitzgerald was no screenwriter. It is a memorable image, and one that evokes the vulnerability of artistic self-esteem.
Today's novelist has what would seem to be a more humane alternative to being a failed hack. The ascent of creative writing courses has given writers a different kind of work to do, and is transforming every established role — writer, reader, editor, critic — in the literary drama.
Online courses in creative writing
Dick Caramel's conversation with his uncle is no longer a stock scene: the writer has become a "professional" with a tenured academic status, a certified technician of language; one would ask him for advice, as one would a doctor, rather than tell him how to do his job.
The terrain has become formalised, mapped out, institutionalised. In one way it's high time writing was formalised: academic institutions offer a shelter for literary values, and for those who wish to practise them, in a way that publishing, being increasingly market-driven, does not.
Painters and musicians have long been protected in a similar way — it is both an entitlement and a necessity for creative people to study and refine their craft. Yet creative writing courses are often seen as being somehow bogus, as even threatening those literary principles they set out to enshrine, though the truth is that the separation of literary from popular values in writing has been virtually impossible to bring about.
A creative writing workshop will contain students whose ambitions and abilities, whose conceptions of literature itself, are so diverse that what they have in common — the desire to write — could almost be considered meaningless.
Moreover, different creative writing tutors will respond to the work presented to them in unpredictable ways. One will like what another dislikes; contradictory advice can be given in two different classes about the same piece of work. So the question is, how can academic appraisal proceed on such terms? The upper benchmark of academic assessment is that the work should be "of publishable standard", which implies though doesn't actually state a touching faith in publication as an assurance of quality.
Appraisal, in other words, is rather more rigorous than a lot of what happens at an editor's desk. How are standards — publishable or otherwise — defined? The answer is: by agreement. There is no autocratic way of assessing literature: the shared basis of language forbids it.This part-time creative writing programme links students in the UK and overseas through virtual learning.
Students study with us from all parts of the world, working in English but enriching the course with a wide range of personal experience and cultural perspectives. The course is mediated by online tutorials and conferences. A small cohort of students exchange and critique writing in a range of literary forms. At the end of the Summer Term of your first year, you have the option of attending a five day Summer School at the Lancaster University campus.
While this is an optional part of the programme, those students who have been able to attend in previous years have found it to be a valuable addition to the programme. It consists of workshops, personal progress reviews, and visits by professionals such as agents, publishers and writers.
A Honours degree UK or equivalent in a Humanities subject is normally required. If you have studied outside of the UK, we would advise you to check our list of international qualifications before submitting your application.
We may ask you to provide a recognised English language qualification, dependent upon your nationality and where you have studied previously. We also consider other English language qualifications. You will study a range of modules as part of your course, some examples of which are listed below. The distance learning MA in Creative Writing is a two-year part-time course. It allows the convenience of study from home, enabling online tutorials with a professional writer who will respond to your work through detailed written reports.
The course accommodates a range of writing, from poetry to fictional forms and is mediated through a simple virtual learning environment. Our approach is student-centred and designed to support a writing project that you will outline at the point of application. Personal online tutorials are held twice a term and you will also participate in termly online conferences, sharing work and critical perspectives with other students.
There is a week-long optional Summer school at the end of the first year. This takes the form of an intensive week of workshops, and provides a valuable addition to the course when you can meet your tutors and fellow students as well as industry professionals such as writers, editors and agents. Information contained on the website with respect to modules is correct at the time of publication, but changes may be necessary, for example as a result of student feedback, Professional Statutory and Regulatory Bodies' PSRB requirements, staff changes, and new research.
Not all optional modules are available every year. The University will not increase the Tuition Fee you are charged during the course of an academic year. If you are studying on a programme of more than one year's duration, the tuition fees for subsequent years of your programme are likely to increase each year. The way in which continuing students' fee rates are determined varies according to an individual's 'fee status' as set out on our fees webpages. The UK government has announced that students who will begin their course in will no longer be eligible to receive the same fee status and financial support entitlement as UK students.
This also applies to those who have deferred entry until Lancaster University has confirmed that students from EU Member States in and later, will now be charged the same tuition fees as other non-UK students. Studying at a UK University means that you need to pay an annual fee for your tuition, which covers the costs associated with teaching, examinations, assessment and graduation.
The fee that you will be charged depends on whether you are considered to be a UK or international student. Visiting students will be charged a pro-rata fee for periods of study less than a year. Get a Prospectus.The MSt in Creative Writing is a two-year, part-time master's degree course offering a unique combination of high contact hours, genre specialisation, and critical and creative breadth. The emphasis of the course is cross-cultural and cross-genre, pointing up the needs and challenges of the contemporary writer who produces their creative work in the context of a global writerly and critical community. The MSt offers a clustered learning format of five residences, two guided retreats and one research placement over two years.
The research placement, a distinguishing feature of the course, provides between one and two weeks' in-house experience of writing in the real world.
The first year concentrates equally on prose fiction, poetry, dramatic writing and narrative non-fiction. There is a significant critical reading and analysis component, which is linked to the writerly considerations explored in each of the genres.
Postgraduate Creative Writing
In your second year you will specialise in one of the following:. The residences in particular offer an intensive workshop- and seminar-based forum for ideas exchange and for the opening up of creative and critical frameworks within which to develop writerly and analytical skills.
There is a strong element of one-to-one tutorial teaching. Tutorials take place within residences and retreats, and relate to the on-going work produced for the course.
You will be assigned a supervisor who will work closely with you throughout the development of the year two final project and extended essay. All assessed work throughout the two years of the course is subject to one-to-one feedback and discussion with a tutor. This intensive, one-to-one input, combined with the highly interactive workshop and seminar sessions, is a distinguishing feature of the course. You will be allocated a supervisor to guide and advise you on your creative and critical work throughout the second year.
The allocation of graduate supervision for this course is the responsibility of the Department for Continuing Education and it is not always possible to accommodate the preferences of incoming graduate students to work with a particular member of staff.
Under exceptional circumstances a supervisor may be found outside the Department for Continuing Education. The MSt is assessed by coursework. In the first year, four assignments two creative, two criticalone creative writing portfolio and one critical essay are submitted.
Work is set during each residence and handed in for assessment before the next meeting. Feedback on work submitted is given during tutorials within the residence or retreat. In the second year, submissions comprise one research placement report, one extended critical essay, and a final project — a substantial body of creative work in the genre of choice.
You will be set specific creative and critical work to be completed between residences and handed in to set deadlines. Creative submissions in the first year must be in more than one genre. In the second year, submitted work focuses around the genre of your choice. The University will seek to deliver this course in accordance with the description set out in this course page. However, there may be situations in which it is desirable or necessary for the University to make changes in course provision, either before or after registration.
The safety of students, staff and visitors is paramount and major changes to delivery or services may have to be made in circumstances of a pandemic including Covidepidemic or local health emergency. In addition, in certain circumstances, for example due to visa difficulties or because the health needs of students cannot be met, it may be necessary to make adjustments to course requirements for international study.
Where possible your academic supervisor will not change for the duration of your course. However, it may be necessary to assign a new academic supervisor during the course of study or before registration for reasons which might include illness, sabbatical leave, parental leave or change in employment.
